U.S. Rep. John Tanner Retiring

by

Rep. John Tanner

Blue Dog Democrat Rep. John Tanner (TN-08) announced yesterday that he will retire in 2010, as first reported first by The Hotline. We updated the database this morning so CongressPro users will have it the next time your iPhone connects to the Internet.  BlackBerry users will have it the next time they log in.

What’s interesting about this retirement is that Rep. Tanner has never faced serious opposition since his election in 1998.  However, this time around a strong challenger outraised him with individual contributions (via OpenSecrets). This might have as much to do with Rep. Tanner expecting to retire, and therefore not being as aggressive in his fund-raising. But it also might say something about the political climate.

According to Politico, the Democratic field is wide open. State Sen. Roy Herron, who is currently running for governor, is now considering dropping out from the governor’s race to run for Tanner’s seat. No matter who runs on the Democratic side, this seat likely will be highly targeted by both parties.
